Edwards Calls For Investigation Of Oil Company Mergers, High Gas Prices

San Francisco (AP) -- Democratic Presidential hopeful John Edwards says he wants the Justice Department to look into mergers in the oil industry and see what impact they've had on gasoline prices.

Edwards is also outlining an energy plan that he says will reduce oil imports and help put the US on a path to "be virtually petroleum-free within a generation."

In his energy plan, Edwards is calling for an increase of federal auto fuel economy requirements to 40 miles per gallon by 2016.

It also calls for the expanded used of biofuels, mandatory restrictions on emissions of carbon dioxide and the creation of a $13 billion energy fund from the sale of greenhouse gas permits.

The plan also calls for ending some tax breaks for the oil industry.
