Des Moines, Iowa (WVLT/AP) -- Aides to Fred Thompson are talking with Iowa Republicans about the actor-politician competing in the Straw Poll in August.
The former Tennessee Senator is considered a likely Presidential candidate. He has formed a Presidential Exploratory Committee and is expected to join the GOP race this summer.
Iowa Republican Party Executive Director Chuck Laudner says Thompson’s aide want to know how the voting works and the logistics. He says the conversations began a couple of weeks ago, and the most recent was at the end of last week after Rudy Giuliani and John McCain announced plans to skip the Straw Poll in Ames.
Their departure rendered the event all but meaningless and essentially cleared the way for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to win the nonbinding contest.
Thompson won the Georgia Staw Poll last month, followed by Georgian Newt Gingrich, neither officially in the Presidential race.
