WASHINGTON (AP) -- Undeclared Republican candidate Fred Thompson reports he raised nearly three and a-half million dollars in one month for his expected presidential bid.
While a tidy sum, it's still shy of the five million-dollar goal his supporters set.
The "Law and Order" actor told the IRS he spent about $625,000 in June, the first month his preliminary campaign committee was operating.
Thompson's take outpaced other Republicans in their initial fund-raising months, but didn't come close to touching Mitt Romney's single-day $6.5 million haul.
The IRS filing gives only a partial picture of Thompson's financial standing. It doesn't include the money raised this month, when Thompson held several large fund-raising events.
