CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Chattanooga City Council member Peter Murphy has filed suit, demanding a runoff election in his district.
Murphy went to Hamilton County Chancery Court with his complaint on Thursday, a week after the county election commission declared former council member Yusuf Hakeem the winner in District 9.
According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, the defendants in Murphy's lawsuit are the Hamilton County Election Commission and elections administrator Charlotte Mullis-Morgan.
The vote count showed neither Murphy nor Hakeem got the required margin of 50 percent plus one vote to win the election. The commission then voted to throw out two write-in ballots that had check marks instead of candidates' names. That gave Hakeem a margin of 50.024 percent.
