Audit called for Shelby Co. Election Commission

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee Election Coordinator Mark Goins says he's requested a performance audit in Shelby County where election officials continue to struggle with incorrect ballots as early voting winds down.

Goins told The Associated Press on Friday that he made the request with the comptroller's office. He says he's not sure when the audit will start.

According to The Commercial Appeal, voting database expert Joe Weinberg said 5.4 percent of voters who cast early ballots within Shelby County have been confronted with incorrect ones -- largely the result of redistricting.

Weinberg said more than 2,300 voters have been affected.

Goins says he wants to get the matter corrected by next Thursday's primary and expects to have an "error free" general election in November.
