WINCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) -- Former Democratic state Sen. Eric Stewart has been indicted on charges of theft and insurance fraud.
District Attorney General Mike Taylor told WKRN-TV that Stewart allegedly sold a worker's comp policy to a couple and used the $750 for his personal use rather than for the policy.
Stewart turned himself in Tuesday night at the Franklin County Jail and later posted a $5,000 bond.
The former lawmaker left the Legislature to run for the 4th Congressional District seat last year but was easily defeated by Republican incumbent Scott DesJarlais.
Since running for Congress, Stewart has been involved in nonprofit fundraising in the Franklin County area.
