Forum to examine Alexander's swearing in

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A forum at Vanderbilt University will examine "one of the most turbulent eras in Tennessee politics," when Lamar Alexander was sworn in as Tennessee governor three days early in 1979 amid a clemency-for-cash scandal.

The Tennessean reports that the forum on Monday evening will include Alexander, former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, Tennessee Supreme Court Justice William Koch and others and will be moderated by John Seigenthaler, former Tennessean editor and publisher.

Alexander was hastily sworn in during a ceremony with then Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Joe Henry to prevent outgoing Democratic Gov. Ray Blanton from pardoning inmates.

Blanton was not convicted of selling pardons, but he was convicted on separate corruption charges.
