KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Former Maine Sen. George Mitchell will deliver the first lecture in the Baker Distinguished Lecture series at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
The lecture series begins Tuesday at the Cox Auditorium and was established this year to promote the values of former Sen. Howard Baker Jr. of Tennessee.
Mitchell, a Democrat, served in the U.S. Senate from 1980 to 1995 and served as the majority leader during his final six years.
He has since served as a peace negotiator and has been appointed to several high-profile investigations, such as the use of performance-enhancing drugs in professional basketball.
