Knoxville business owners get the chance to chime in on politics

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's no secret that small businesses are vital to the local economy. That's why the Knoxville Chamber is hosting a series of legislative briefings.

It's a chance for local business owners to hear about key issues the state legislature is dealing with, particularly those that affect business people.

"What happens in Nashville is important to businesses," noted Garrett Wagley, Vice President of Policy and Public Relations for the Chamber. "It can affect your tax rate. It can affect the paper work you have to fill out and regulations on what you can do in your business, what you can't do in your business. All of those things are vitally important to the business community."

State Representative Bill Dunn spoke Friday morning about some of Nashville's hot topics this session, including spending education dollars wisely, reforming the state's civil service program and, of course, job creation.

"There's a lot of politicians who run around saying 'I'm gonna create jobs, I'm gonna create jobs'," Dunn said. "What government needs to do is provide good infrastructure, good education, good systems in place, but then they need to get out of people's way so that their entrepreneurial spirit can go out and create these jobs."

The Knoxville Chamber plans to host another legislative briefing next month. For more information, click on the link to the Chamber's website.
