Record number of Tennesseans flock to polls to vote early

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Early voters came out in droves this year, according to new numbers from Secretary of State Tre Hargett. A record number Tennesseans cast their ballot early or absentee by mail.

By the time early voting ended on Saturday, 326,876 voters pinked their candidates. That's more than 50% more than the previous record, set in August 2008. The election will take place on Thursday.

“For the last year, our Division of Elections has conducted an unprecedented voter outreach effort,” Hargett said. "We see that reflected in these record early voting numbers.”

Hargett also reminded voters to bring a state- or federally-issued photo ID to the polls with them in order to cast their ballot on Thursday. A voter without one will be turned away he warned, noting they will receive a provisional ballot.
