Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear will take over the Southern Governors Association following last weekends conference

RIO GRANDE, PR (WVLT) -- Southern Governors headed to the Caribbean over the weekend to discuss how increase investment and trade between the Southern states and Latin America. Puerto Rican Gov. Luis Fortuno hosted his fellow governors for the weekend conference before handing over chairmanship to Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear.

“This year’s highly productive annual meeting in Puerto Rico has given Governors and other participants new ideas, new contacts and new tasks as we continue the important effort of expanding economic and trade opportunities for our states and territories, for our businesses and for our entire region with emerging markets in Latin America,” Gov. Fortuno said.

During this year's Southern Governors Associatio meeting, energy issues highlighted much of Fortuno's agenda, with business sessions targeting energy production in the South, energy security and its effects on economic development, as well as environmental policies.

The association's membership is composed of the Governors of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia and West Virginia.
