JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- A jury has found a Johnson City father on trial for murder in the shooting death of his toddler son guilty of lesser charges.

The Johnson City Press reported the jury on Wednesday convicted 29-year-old Christopher Mitchell of criminally negligent homicide and felony reckless endangerment. He had been charged with felony murder.

Mitchell's 2-year-old son, Jacob, died of a gunshot wound to the head in 2009. Mitchell told authorities he had placed a loaded handgun in a cabinet and was asleep when his son climbed a chair and got the weapon.

He said he awoke to a gunshot and saw his wounded child.

The boy's mother, Heather Bible, testified for the prosecution, saying she never saw her son climb to get into cabinets.
