COLUMBIA, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities in Columbia say a man has died in an early morning house fire.

WSMV-TV reported police were on the scene quickly when the fire was reported around 1:20 a.m. Friday and broke a window to rescue a woman shortly before fire engines arrived. Officials said the woman told them she tried to reach her husband, but could not.

Firefighters said the man died in the fire. The woman received burns.

Columbia Assistant Fire Chief Tim Holt credits the two police officers with saving the wife's life

Both victims were in their 40s and authorities did not immediately release their names.

Fire investigators said the couple was using electric and kerosene heaters in their homes.
