Mother and 2 children found dead in Manchester home

UPDATED, MANCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) -- A soldier who served in Afghanistan and Iraq is accused of killing his girlfriend and her two young children in Manchester, Tenn. He is charged with stuffing their corpses into plastic garbage bags and hiding them in a closet for days.

Manchester Police Chief Ross Simmons identified the victims as 26-year-old Stephanie Hershman and her sons, 3-year-old Jathan and 1-year-old Jaylon.

Police said the man charged is 30-year-old Matthew Perkins, of Tullahoma.

According to Army records, Perkins was deployed to Afghanistan from April 2004 to April 2005, and served in Iraq from August 2006 to October 2007. He enlisted in the Army in 2007 out of Murray, Ky., as an infantryman. He has been an Army recruiter in Tullahoma since July 2008.

His arraignment is set for Tuesday.

MANCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) -- A mother and her two young children have been found dead in a Manchester home.

Manchester Police officials told WSMV-TV they have a suspect in custody.

Police found the bodies after responding to a call at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

They arrested Matthew Victor Perkins at a hotel in Tullahoma shortly before midnight.

The identities of the three victims have not been released.
