Former Memphis Councilman Gets 4 Years in Prison for Bribery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Former Memphis councilman Rickey Peete has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for bribery.

The 52-year-old was sentenced on a guilty plea to taking $12,400 in bribes for his vote on a property zoning change.

The term of 51 months will be his second trip to federal prison.

He was convicted of extorting money from home builders while on the council in 1989 and spent two years in prison plus six months in a halfway house.

He was re-elected in 1995 but resigned in May after being indicted.

Councilman Edmund Ford is also indicted and charged with bribery. Ford has pleaded innocent and remains on the council.
