Bredesen Frustrated By Problems At State Veterans Home

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Governor Bredesen wants officials to find a way to independently verify that state veterans' homes are functioning properly to help avoid future closures.

Bredesen, a Democrat, last month suspended admissions to the veterans home in Murfreesboro for the third time in 16 months. State inspectors had found several incidents of violence between residents.

Bredesen told state Veterans Affairs Commissioner John Keys in budget hearings this week that he would consider spending up to $200,000 annually to hire outside inspectors to regularly review the homes' performance.

Bredesen says the inspectors could give officials an early warning about any problems.

The Tennessee State Veterans Homes Board operates all 140-bed facilities, located in Murfreesboro, Humboldt and Knoxville. Each operates at an average capacity of more than 100 residents.
