278th Regiment commander retiring from military

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The commander of the Tennessee National Guard's largest unit is retiring.

Col. Frank C. McCauley will turn over command of the 278th Regiment to Col. Darrell D. Darnbush at a ceremony on April 14.

McCauley has led the 278th since May 2011. He was deputy commander when the regiment was deployed to Iraq in 2010. He was also with the 278th on its first Iraq deployment in 2004.

McCauley is retiring after 32 years of military service.

Darnbush brings 30 years of service to his new command and has received a number of commendations and awards.

The 278th is Tennessee's largest command, with units stretching from Kingsport to Memphis and is composed of more than 3,700 soldiers in three maneuver squadrons.
