Bedford grand jury to study racetrack melee

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Bedford County grand jury will hear assault charges against an auto racer and his brother stemming from an incident at Duck River Speedway.

Marvin Bobby Parker faces five counts of aggravated assault and a count of misdemeanor assault. Mike Parker faces a count of aggravated assault.

According to warrants, Marvin Parker tried to run over several patrons and actually hit one June 7, causing injury.

A police report said Mike Parker tried to strike another man with "a pipe-like object."

Witnesses said cars had been banging each other during a race prior to the melee.

The grand jury is to convene next Monday.
