One Tennessee congressional race with no incumbent

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Republican Monty Lankford wants voters in Tennessee's 4th Congressional District to do something he has never done: Vote for an outsider.

Lankford lives in Franklin, in the 7th Congressional District. He is challenging Democratic incumbent Lincoln Davis of Pall Mall in the 4th District that spans 24 counties from southern Middle Tennessee to northern East Tennessee.

Tennessee Election Coordinator Brook Thompson said he doesn't know of anyone from outside the district ever winning a congressional seat in the state.

In a battle of newcomers in upper East Tennessee's 1st District, Democrat Rob Russell is matched against Republican Phil Roe.

Independent candidates Joel Goodman, Thomas (T.K.) Owens and James W. Reeves are also on the ballot in the 1st District.

Tennessee's' other congressional incumbents are expected to win handily, with one unopposed and one facing independent candidates.

Only Roe and Owens support sanctity of marraige, defined as a union between one man and one woman. Owens believes abortion should never be used as a form of birth control; while Roe says, "I will believe we should overturn Roe vrs. Wade."
