Defendant captured after bolting from courtroom

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- A Chattanooga man in court to answer domestic assault and resisting arrest charges added to his list of troubles after he fled when given permission to use the restroom.

Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Janice Atkinson says 21-year-old Anthony O. Smith appeared in before Hamilton County Sessions Court Judge David Bales at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Bales called Smith to approach the bench, and Smith asked to use the restroom.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports Smith was given permission to use the restroom in a holding cell adjacent to the courtroom.

Instead, he ran from the courtroom and out of the building.

Police arrested Smith at a nearby apartment complex and charged him with evading arrest and simple assault.
