JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- The College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, Meharry Medical School in Nashville and Nashville-based Centerstone Research Institute are sharing a federal grant of $8.3 million to help curb substance abuse.

The Tennessee Department of Mental Health is managing the grant, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The program is designed to combat substance abuse through early detection and intervention.

The focus is to allow access to more comprehensive substance abuse screening and referrals to treatment for people at higher risk. The program targets members of the Tennessee National Guard, and others, identified as high risk candidates.
