CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Three men have been sentenced on civil rights convictions in Chattanooga.
According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, 27-year-old James Smiley and 22-year-old Kyle Montgomery were sentenced to a year in prison while 22-year-old Colton Partin was given six months of house arrest. All three will be on probation following their sentences.
The men pleaded guilty in January to a single count of civil rights intimidation for launching a fireworks barrage against black residents of a public housing project last summer.
U.S. District Court Judge Curtis Collier told Smiley, Montgomery and Partin he had received many letters that characterized their actions as a prank or a youthful indiscretion, but he said their actions showed they intended to hurt people.
