ASHLAND CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities arrested four people after they were indicted by a Cheatham County grand jury on multiple counts of animal cruelty stemming from a dog fighting operation that was discovered in Ashland City last year.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that their agents, along with the Cheatham County Sheriff's Office, made the arrests on Monday. They were booked into the jail on $50,000 bonds.

James Callis, Gary Phelps and Avery Bell, all of Ashland City, and Arsenio Williams, of Nashville, were all charged with animal fighting, cruelty to animals and aggravated cruelty to animals. It was unclear Tuesday whether they had attorneys.

Firefighters responding to a brush fire at Bell's home discovered about 60 dogs chained in the woods, and a search of the property found dog fighting equipment.
