4 state school systems get innovation grants

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Four school systems in Tennessee will receive Innovation Acceleration Fund grants to assist them in designing and/or implementing alternative salary schedules.

They are Putnam County Schools, $3.1 million; Trousdale County Schools, $1 million; Lexington City Schools, $1 million; and Knox County Schools, $4.6 million.

According to the Tennessee Department of Education, the amount of the grants was based on the district's teacher count and annual progress reports.

The funds came from the First to the Top federal program.

State officials said new salary schedules would reward teachers and principals for increasing student achievement.
