6 charged with diverting $1.8 million in scrap

JASPER, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities in Marion County have charged a half-dozen people in what investigators said was a scheme to steal $1.8 million in scrap metal.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, the crime involved truck drivers, security guards, scrap metal plant employees and the owner of a scrap metal yard.

Jay Sanders, Gary Alto, Randall Brown, Melissa Brown, James King and Craig Meeks have been charged with theft of property over $250,000. Some of the accused surrendered by Monday and all are expected to turn themselves in.

The Tennessee Department of Safety said Sanders and Alto, who drive for SCS Trucking in Whitwell, developed the scheme to divert loads they were carrying to Dodson Scrap Metal, also in Whitwell.

No comment was available from officials of the trucking firm or the scrapyard.
