Man likely drowned after fell off cliff into lake

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- A man fell to his death off a cliff into the Watauga River near Winged Deer Park Thursday night.

Washington County Sheriff's Office Lt. Randall Wines told the Johnson City Press that 39-year-old John Morton was playing fetch with his dog when he threw a ball over the chain-link fence behind his home.

Morton climbed over the fence, but lost his footing and fell.

Divers recovered Morton's body within about 30 minutes after a 911 call at 7:30 p.m.

The incident is being investigated as a drowning.
