Murder suspect jumps to death, just out of reach of police

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A man wanted for a beating death in Nashville jumped to his death in Knoxville Saturday night.

Knoxville police had gotten a tip from Metro Nashville Police that William Troope, 50, could be in East Tennessee.

Officers tracked Troope to the area around West Town Mall after his cell phone pinged on a tower near there.

Investigators spotted his car at the Ramada Inn, 7737 Kingston Pike and went up to his room.

When they entered, trying to serve the warrant, KPD says Troope jumped from the third floor balcony and landed head first on the pavement.
Troope was transported to the hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
