Local country star Carl Smith dead at 82

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Nashville has lost an honky-tonk stylist of the old-school: Maynardville's own "country gentleman."

Carl Smith knew he wanted to perform from the moment he first heard the Grand Ole Opry.

He mowed lawns to pay for guitar lessons, and got his singing start on Cas Walker's radio show when he was in high school.

His six year marriage to June Carter beget some memorable duets, a daughter, country's own Carlene Carter, and a friendship with Johnny Cash.

His career gave us "Let's Live a Little" and "If Teardrops were Pennies," along with 30 more top ten hits.

Carl Smith died at his home in Franklin Saturday.

He was 82 years old.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but he's expected to be laid to rest alongside his late wife, country singer Goldie Hill, at Williamson Memorial Gardens in Franklin.

Carl Smith was a distant cousin of my dad's, so I grew up on his music. The man had a style all his own, and was ahead of his time. He'll be missed by many, friend and family alike, goodbye, Carl, Godspeed.

I have listened to country music for many years and was so sorry to hear about the passing of Carl Smith--my late husband name was Carl Smith Crawford so I do have special feeling for that name. His music was great and we heard Grand Old Opry many nights on radio. I love America and I am quite sad of the way things are today. God Bless
