Military: 3 Fort Campbell soldiers killed

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) -- The military announced the deaths of three soldiers from Fort Campbell in separate attacks in Afghanistan.

According to the military, Sgt. 1st Class John H. Jarrell, of Brunson, S.C., and Sgt. Leston M. Winters, of Sour Lake, Texas, died July 15 in Kandahar after their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device.

Jarrell and Winters were both assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.

Also on Monday, the military said 29-year-old Sgt. Matthew W. Weikert of Jacksonville, Ill., was killed July 17 in the Paktika province also when his unit was attacked with an IED.

Weikert was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.
