CLAXTON, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Two people are dead after an officer-involved shooting in Anderson Co. on Wednesday afternoon.
The shootings occurred following a chase that reportedly began in Lake City when a truck with Indiana tags drove off without paying for gas, TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm explained.
Someone at the and station wrote down the truck's plate number and called police. They determined the truck was stolen out of Indiana.
An Anderson Co. deputy spotted the truck and tried to pull it over, according to the TBI. The truck took off and the officer chased after it.
Anderson Co. Sheriff Paul White said the suspects started shooting during the seven mile chase and continued to fire after stopping and trying to run away.
The chase continued to Old Emory Road and Block House Road, near the Claxton Volunteer Fire Dept. building, when the truck blew a tire and the driver lost control.
Helm said that's when the driver took off running through a field and was shot. He later died at the hospital. The woman was shot and killed at the scene.
Neither deputy was hurt in the shootout according to Chief Deputy Mark Lucas. He tells us both received initial critical incident stress debriefing.
The sheriff's office will ensure they are OK both physically and emotionally. They are on administrative leave (with pay) which is standard procedure in any officer involved shooting. They are not releasing the deputies names or the suspects names.
The TBI is also conducting the forensics of the scene. This is standard procedure as well.
