Arlington student wins Poetry Out Loud contest

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Anita Norman, a freshman at Arlington High School, will head to Washington, D.C., in May as Tennessee's winner of the Poetry Out Loud competition.

Anita presented poems Saturday by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Dudley Randall and Adelaide Crapsey in winning the contest and earning $1,200 in cash prizes and the trip to Washington for the national competition.

MaryBeth Yancey from Dickson County High School was first runner-up and won $600 in cash prizes.

Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation competition sponsored in part by the Tennessee Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
