Audit of human resources agency finds $2M misspent

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A state audit of the Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency has found $2 million in questionable spending.

The agency provides social services such as job training and food for the elderly in 14 counties on the Cumberland Plateau.

The Tennessean reports the agency misspent its state and federal funding on travel, entertainment and subsidies for a training resort.

The agency spent nearly $60,000 on a trip to Washington, D.C. last year. That included nearly $4,300 on a single dinner for employees and guests. The agency also spent more than $100,000 on mobile phones.

Since 1995, the organization has subsidized the Lakeside Resort and Educational Training Complex to the tune of nearly $1.7 million.

The agency is separate from the Upper Cumberland Development District, which is also being audited.
