Burn permits offered online

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Burn permits are now offered online, as the wildfire season officially begins.

State agencies hope the option will keep wild fires to a minimum.

This season is expected to be average, despite a drought earlier in the year. Late summer rain helped keep East Tennessee from becoming too dry.

Last year was a different story, when more than 700 fires torched close to 10,000 acres.

Fire season lasts until May.
