City of Bartlett counting annexed residents

BARTLETT, Tenn. (AP) -- The Shelby County city of Bartlett is doing a population count in areas recently annexed by the city.

Mayor Keith McDonald told The Commercial Appeal it is important to spread the tax burden evenly among all residents.

City officials sent letters with return envelopes this month to residences in the newly-annexed areas. City planners estimate 2,300 people live in the areas. The estimate could mean 30-40 new homes were built in the zones since the 2010 Census.

Results of the head count must be sent to the state by March 1 for verification
