City Council to weigh in on moving Strut

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- The Chattanooga City Council has agreed to consider a resolution urging administration support for people who want the Bessie Smith Strut at its original downtown location.

Mayor Ron Littlefield angered many black residents of the city last month when he announced the celebration would be moved to the riverfront and renamed the Bessie Smith Celebration.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported an overflow crowd marched to a scheduled City Council meeting Tuesday night and heard community leader Gloria Griffith say the strut wasn't Littlefield's to take. The event celebrates the life of the Chattanooga-born blues singer and has been held on Martin Luther King Boulevard for three decades.

The resolution is to be considered at the next council meeting.
