CLEVELAND, Tenn. (AP) -- The city of Cleveland is celebrating their connection to the Rev. Billy Graham by naming a street after the popular evangelist who was just a young college student when he lived in the East Tennessee city.
Friday will be declared "Billy Graham Day" and a ribbon cutting event will unveil the new Billy Graham Avenue near Lee University. The Cleveland Daily Banner reports that Graham came to Cleveland in the 1930s to attend Bob Jones College, which is now located in South Carolina.
Graham attended the college for six months before transferring to the Florida Bible Institute near Tampa. During his time in Tennessee, he worked at a shoe store in downtown Cleveland and preached his first sermon at the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1936 in Charleston.
