Creativity runs wild during Destination Imagination

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Teams from all over the world are in Knoxville for the Global Finals for Destination Imagination; a program that lets kids use their creativity to solve problems.

Chuck Cadle the CEO of Destination Imagination said "It's an educational program were student teams solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at Tournaments. Teams are tested to think on their feet, work together and find solutions."

More than 15,000 people are here for the Global Finals from the United States, 7 Canadian provinces and 12 foreign countries.

While the teams are there to present projects that they've been working on for months; they're also put to the test with instant challenges.

Alexa Toews from Alberta, Canada said "We are given some odds and ends and with that we have about 5 minutes to come up with a creative solution. It's cool to see the different ways other teams approach the problems."

Teams are also encouraged to wear something creative like a hat or outfit. Alexa and her teammates came up with a way to show everyone where they're from.

"Our hats look like cowboy hats but we call them Stetsons. It's a tradition in Alberta and it shows people where we're from. It's also helpful in case we get lost because the hats really stand out." said Keely Anderson from Team Alberta, Canada.

It's a program that helps kids think "outside the box" and discover new ideas.

"Kids are taught to think practical first but we want them to learn that the best ideas are the ones they think of later and we teach them how to make that bridge to creativity." said Chuck.

The Global Finals have been held in Knoxville since 2001 and while the kids spend time working on problem solving they also have a little fun. Teams bring pins from their hometowns and trade throughout the competition; a popular tradition between all the teams.
