ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) -- The defense is presenting evidence in the trial of former Unicoi County Sheriff Kent Harris.
The state wrapped up presentation of its case on Tuesday and Harris' lawyer called the first defense witness to the stand.
The Johnson City Press reported Pattye Elliott, director of East Tennessee Bloodhound Rescue, told the jury Harris donated $5,500 to the group to care for two bloodhounds for the rest of their lives. Part of prosecutors' case against Harris is a county check for $4,500. District Attorney General Tony Clark told the jury in his opening statement Monday that he would prove the $4,500 ended up in Harris' hands.
Harris is currently being tried on two of 10 felony counts against him -- theft over $1,000 and criminal simulation.
