Defense asks evidence be limited in toddler death

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Defense attorneys want a Chattanooga judge to limit evidence the state can use in child neglect trial.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported attorneys for Traci Carpenter went to Hamilton County Criminal Court on Monday, asking that any evidence of abuse to 18-month-old Sierra Carpenter that was not related to the child's death be barred.

The toddler died of severe head trauma in 2006.

Traci Carpenter, who is 25, is charged with aggravated child neglect. Prosecutors say bruises on the child's body before her death indicated she was being abused.

In 2008, a jury acquitted Brian Rutherford in the child's death. Rutherford is Traci Carpenter's former boyfriend.
