Dentist buys Halloween candy

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A local dentist offered trick or treaters the chance to sell their Halloween candy.

Collectively, Americans spend billions of dollars buying 600 Million tons of candy for Halloween.

That means most families will end up with more candy than they can likely handle. While it might be tempting to eat it all, one dentist wanted to offer a program to prevent cavities and tooth decay in children.

Dr. Jessica Phillips with East Tennessee Pediatric Dentistry offered to buy back the candy, at one dollar per pound. She said, "Kids like sugary candies and juices and sodas and things like that so this is maybe a fun way to help minimize how much candy they're eating."

East Tennessee Pediatric Dentistry accepted candy at its Callahan Road location. A five dollar limit was placed on the amount of candy they would purchase.

The dentist office planned to send the candy to the troops.
