JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- East Tennessee State University has installed 20 new flashing pedestrian lights as a safety measure for students.

The Johnson City Press reports students found the devices installed last week when they returned for the spring semester.

Shawn Benson, director of campus planning at ETSU, said crews installed the beacons at busier crosswalks around the 15,000-student campus in an effort to improve pedestrian safety.

He said the signs have solar panels on top that power the flashing LED lights.
