Posted: Fri 7:10 AM, Feb 08, 2013

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) -- Volunteers in East Ridge will be installing free smoke detectors in areas of the city where a lot of fires have been reported.

The Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office got a grant for the detectors, and East Ridge hopes to place at least 1,000 of them during the coming year. Citizens who come to homes to put in the detectors will have a city identification tag.

Among volunteer groups installing the detectors are East Ridge's Ruritan Club, Kiwanis Club, Optimist Club, Merchant's Association and Chamber of Commerce.
