Effort seeks to allow vote on distillery

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- A movement is afoot in Chattanooga to pave the way for a whiskey bearing the city's name to be made there.

County Commission Chairman Larry Henry told the Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/ToBe7k) that he hopes to get a majority of commissioners to sign a letter of recommendation for a distilled spirits referendum in enough time to present it to state lawmakers on Dec. 13.

Currently, Chattanooga Whiskey is made in Indiana because Hamilton County has a prohibition on distilleries. Although state lawmakers approved a bill in 2009 that let some counties decide whether to allow distilleries, Hamilton County wasn't included.

The letter asks that the county be added to the roster.
