Evangelist faces charges related to squalor

BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Bluff City pastor and television evangelist is scheduled to appear in Sullivan County court on allegations that she allowed her diabetic husband and 92-year-old mother to live in filth.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports Brenda Viars faces charges of abuse or neglect of an impaired adult on Monday.

Her mother and husband were removed from their home in February 2011 and immediately hospitalized. Authorities said the apartment was so littered with trash that it was difficult to walk and the stench could be smelled in the adjoining church.

Viars is pastor of the All for Jesus Church of God and host of cable television program "King's Servants."

In a 2011 interview, Viars said she was doing her best and was sorry the apartment got out of hand.
