Friday last day to register to vote by mail; Driver facility open Sat. for IDs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Friday is the last day for Tennesseans to register to vote by mail.

Post offices will be closed for Columbus Day on Monday, which is also the last day to register to vote in person.

A spokesman for the secretary of state's office said all but two county election offices will be open on Monday to accept last-minute registrations. Only election offices in Lewis and Hickman counties will be closed.

Meanwhile, the Safety Department is opening eight driver service centers on Saturday to issue photo IDs for voters to comply with a new state law requiring them in order to cast ballots.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security will open eight of its driver service centers Saturday for an extra chance to get a photo id for voting in the November election.

The eight driver service centers will be open from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The centers will issue voter photo IDs and convert non-photo driver licenses into photo driver licenses only. No other services will be available during these special hours.
