Fisk singers performing with high school groups

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The renowned Fisk University Jubilee Singers of Nashville will perform with high school choral students in Chattanooga and Paris.

The first concert is Sunday with students from the Center for Creative Arts magnet school in Chattanooga. The concert will be at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

The Fisk singers will perform Thursday, March 15, with the Henry County High School Madrigals at the First United Methodist Church in Paris.

According to a news release from Fisk, the concerts are an effort to introduce high school choral students to African-American spiritual singing.

The Fisk singers have a long history of achievement. After the Civil War, they preserved what was known as Negro spirituals and helped raise money to save the school. They received the National Medal of Arts in 2008.
