MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A former contract veterinarian for the Memphis Animal Shelter has testified that she got nowhere with complaints about how animals were being treated there in summer 2009.

The Commercial Appeal reports Rebecca Coleman testified for three hours on Wednesday in the animal cruelty trial of shelter veterinarian Angela Middleton.

Coleman told the jury she first tried to go up the chain of command, sharing her concerns with Middleton, former shelter director Ernest Alexander and administrative supervisor Tina Quattlebaum.

Then she began contacting law enforcement and animal welfare agencies.

In October 2009, the shelter was raided by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

In February 2010, Middleton was indicted on six counts of animal cruelty related to three dogs that starved.
