MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Police in Memphis say a toddler whose father left her and her siblings in a vehicle for a short time died after her head became trapped by a power window.
The Commercial Appeal reported Monday that 2-year-old Reniyah Ballard managed to get out of her seatbelt and became trapped by the window of her father's sport utility vehicle. Reginald Ballard Sr. told police he went into a fast-food restaurant Sunday night, leaving the child and her two siblings in the SUV. He came back out less than 10 minutes later to find Reniyah had rolled up the window, trapping herself and cutting off her airway.
Ballard attempted CPR and then drove the child to a nearby fire station. The girl was pronounced dead at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. An autopsy was pending.
The 24-year-old Ballard was charged with criminally negligent homicide. It wasn't immediately clear whether he had an attorney.
