Grand jury to hear charges in Nashville decapitation case

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A grand jury in Nashville will hear charges against a man accused of killing and decapitating another man.

WTVF-TV reported that a judge found probable cause Thursday for the charges against 37-year-old Henry James Baxter. He is charged with homicide in the shooting death of 48-year-old Erman Thompson.

Police have quoted Baxter as saying he shot Thompson in the head and used a shovel to decapitate him. The head was found in a trash can last Friday, a day after a mail carrier found the body in a field.

Detectives said Baxter had been living at Thompson's home along with Thompson's wife and her three children.

During the court hearing, a Metro Nashville police detective testified Baxter initially told him he killed Thompson because Thompson was threatening his wife, Ashly Thompson.

The detective also testified that Baxter only confessed to killing Thompson after they told him Ashly Thompson was taking the blame.

Police also said Baxter was the father of one of Ashly Thompson's children.

Bond for Baxter remains at $750,000.
