High school team forfeits after hazing incident

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A Memphis high school football team is forfeiting its season opening game after an alleged hazing incident.

The Commercial Appeal says White Station High School is forfeiting its game to Ridgeway High School on Friday night.

The forfeit was announced in a letter from Memphis City Schools superintendent Kriner Cash. The letter announced disciplinary action against several players, head coach Devin Rutherford and members of his staff.

The letter did not provide details of the alleged hazing.

Memphis City Schools general counsel Dorsey Hopson said police were notified after the district received a complaint from a parent that hazing had occurred.

Cash's letter said counseling will be provided to students who "witnessed or experienced the hazing."
